Motoring in the Rain to Middleport

It started raining last night, and by the time we woke this morning the temperature was 50 degrees with the rain firmly entrenched in the region, showing no signs of letting up all day. While I'd had plans of attending the Chocolate & Wine Festival, doing so in the cold rain didn't excite me at all, so I scratched that off the day's to-do list. The only traffic we encountered until Lockport were three crew teams practicing in the rain - just ugly conditions. I bet they were rowing hard just to stay warm. Shortly before Lockport we passed the tour boat Lockview V heading west. There were 10 brave tourists standing outside enjoying the view and for a short while the rain became a heavy mist, so it was probably at least bearable. After passing us, the tour boat turned around and fell in behind us as we headed toward Lockport, so we knew we'd have company as we transited the lock. We did lock through with the tour boat, it was up front in both locks, while we hung toward the back. I stayed inside and drove the boat while Mike braved the weather out on deck. Of course, while locking down the rain became heavier, making it an unpleasant experience for poor Mike. Even the tourists on the tour boat eventually went below into the cabin to escape the rain. After Lockport, there were two lift bridges we had to pass under, though they were a breeze, lifting for us as we approached so we barely had to slow down. We passed two powerboats heading west, and eventually caught up to and passed a small sailboat we'd seen in Tonawanda, but that was all the traffic we saw - not too surprising considering the weather. We stopped for the day at the Middleport town docks (free, with electricity and water), having gone 29 miles. At 1 pm it was 55 degrees and pouring rain, and the temperature went down slowly throughout the afternoon. The rain never let up. When we arrived it was raining so hard we just looped one mid-ship line around a cleat (it's nice to have a rectangular boat), plugged in one electrical cord and went back inside the boat. After a while, we decided that we really ought to tie the boat off better since the gusty wind was blowing us around a bit. We went out, positioned the boat between two power pedestals because each pedestal had only one plug, ran a second electrical cord, tied the boat off well and dove back inside. With two electrical lines plugged in we could have both our heaters operating, as well as our water heater and our convection/microwave oven. We spent the afternoon organizing our life after the boat is hauled in two weeks. We'll be heading to Vermont for a bit, then moving the coach down to North Carolina to be with family and attend the memorial service for my uncle, Bill (William) Flash , who passed away this week after a life well lived. Lots to organize since we'll need to bounce back and forth between NC and VT to get everything accomplished, but heck, our time is cheap, and driving is inexpensive, so we'll just put some miles behind us.

Rowing

Rowing

Rowing, often referred to as crew in the United States, is a sport with origins back to Ancient Egyptian times. It is based on propelling a boat on water using oars. By pushing against the water with an oar, a force is generated to move the boat. The sport can be either recreational - focusing on learning the technique of rowing, or competitive - where athletes race against each other in boats. There are a number of different boat classes in which athletes compete, ranging from an individual shell to an eight person shell with coxswain.
Modern rowing as a competitive sport can be traced to the early 18th century when races were held between professional watermen on the River Thames in London, United Kingdom. Often prizes were offered by the London Guilds and Livery Companies. Amateur competition began towards the end of the 18th century with the arrival of "boat clubs" at the British public schools of Eton College and Westminster School. Similarly, clubs were formed at the University of Oxford, with a race held between Brasenose College and Jesus College in 1815. At the University of Cambridge the first recorded races were in 1827.
