TRANSCRIPT: Interview with Juliane Kippenberg on Gold Diving in the Philippines

Hey everyone Steve Miller here with an Asian Now feature from the October 9th, 2015. Edition of Asian news weekly in this podcast I speak with Juliane Kippenberg associate director of Human Rights Watch’s children rights division about mining and... Over the past couple of years we have spoken about the issue regarding Human rights in Asia several times we mentioned the trafficking of women, men being duped into performing hard labour and of course the deplorable practice by some to target... Recently there was a report released by Human Rights Watch the details of the operation of compression mines in the Philippines. Miners sometimes as young as 8 or 9 years old breathe through flimsy, plastic tubes. This week I spoke with Juliane Kippenberg associate director of Human Rights Watch’s children rights division and I started off our conversation by asking her how she became aware of this practice as there are laws in place inside the Philippines... Juliane Kippenberg:. Well we have heard about this because this have been in the media and also because we have a researcher base there and so we heard about this from local NGO’s (Non-Governmental Organizations) and other people on the ground and we were particularly... Which is also often called compressor mining in the Philippines where adolescences as well as adults dive through some very narrow cracks deep down into the water for hours on end biting on a sort of little plastic tube that provides them with... Are we talking about really an isolated area within the Philippines or is it a fairly wide spread. Juliane Kippenberg:. Child laboring and small scale gold mining is in a really wide spread in the Philippines. There are small scale gold mining areas really all across the country and so we have found that this is a pretty common problem and it is like small scale gold mining is quite a significant sort of economic factor in the Philippines and it... It definitely exist in the Camarines Norte province but we did noted also it exist a lot in other places we did observe it a little bit in Masbate province but we didn’t find any children working there. Okay, then let’s talk about your trip there because you were actually there on the ground. Can you describe what saw taking place. Juliane Kippenberg:. So I was telling you a little bit about underwater because you were just asking me about that but then I will tell you a little bit about also the other type of really dangerous work which is for example work in deep pits and work with mercury. But instead with the underwater mining. So basically this underwater mining takes place in coastal areas obviously the gold ores are underneath the water table so people have figured out that one way of getting to the ore is to dive for it. For example in rivers and also right on the... And we also saw this from a distance had some colleagues went to that place and interviewed people there and then I myself went to another place which was on a river and it wasn’t accessible that it wasn’t that easily accessible so it was a little... We hired a very narrow wobbly kind of canoe or boat that took us out there and I actually on a total basis I just left behind all my things except my note book and my camera because I really felt everything could just tip into the water. The canoe was a complete rack and it was also raining and it was just like you know it was one of these canoes where you can’t come out and you are basically soaked but that’s okay. So anyway we went out down that river a little bit but the further we went down the louder it became because of these machines sort of making this loud noise and in the distance and it was these compressors that provide the oxygen to those who are...

LARGE An important part of Malay maritime heritage has been the building of unique wooden sailboats. Cengal (or also known as iron wood) trees with an average density from 915kg to 980kg per square meter are mainly used due to its quality and durability. Throughout the world, no other shipwrights are using this traditional technique, in which the planks are fire bent, then joined to each other with ironwood dowels (Malay: pasak) made from "Penaga"-wood (Mesua Ferea) set 2” apart. Neither plan nor frames, only eye and knowledge of the master determine the shape of a ships body: the frames are installed into the finished hull! There is no European style caulking hammered into a groove between the planks: the planks are assembled edge on edge with no groove in between them. The bark of a tree of the "Melaleuka" species (Malay: kulit gelam) is pushed over the tapered dowels, sitting in the fitted plank. Afterwards the new plank is hammered home with about a hundred...
