Palmer Johnson to close Sturgeon Bay facility - Green Bay Press Gazette

Palmer Johnson Yachts Inc. owner Timur Mohamed announced in a press release Wednesday the company plans to close its Sturgeon Bay manufacturing facilities. According to Marc Castillo, general manager of Palmer Johnson Yachts, there are 100 people employed at the Sturgeon Bay facilities. The company plans to close its Sturgeon Bay operations at 128 Kentucky St. and 1023 Egg Harbor Road once it finishes it current yacht project. “We don’t know exactly how long we’ll be working,” Castillo said. In the news release Mohamed stated "Our operation and employment levels have continued to diminish, sales have diminished, offshore competitive pressures have escalated, and as a result this action becomes a necessity. We are disappointed and saddened by this business closing and yet realize that there is no alternative. The company itself is not closing at this time. “We are looking at all options right now for continuing” to operate, Castillo said. According to a news release from the Department of Workforce Development, the Bay Area Workforce Development Board is working with Palmer Johnson to help workers affected by the shutdown. Employees are being offered services from the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development (DWD) Dislocated Worker Program. The yacht building company has a long history in Sturgeon Bay. According to Jon Gast, Door County Maritime Museum tour coordinator in Sturgeon Bay, the business was founded in 1918 as Sturgeon Bay Boat Works. The original owners of the company were Hans Johnson and Herman Gmack. Johnson eventually bought out Gmack. In 1929 there was a decline in commercial fishing so the company began building wooden sail and power yachts, Gast said. Years later Hans Johnson's son Palmer became involved with the business. After purchasing the boatmaker, a group of Sturgeon Bay businessmen changed the name to Palmer Johnson Boats in his honor in 1956. Since its founding the business has changed owners more than five times. Mohamed purchased the company about 12 years ago. Over time Palmer Johnson has become a company known around the world for its luxury yachts. “There are not many names in this community or this part of the state that are known internationally as much as Palmer Johnson is,” Gast said. Palmer Johnson's upcoming closing will have an impact on the community's maritime history. It goes back almost 100 years to its original founding,” he said. Given the company's past and how often it seems Sturgeon Bay has been about to lose the famed yacht-making company over the years, Gast hopes someone will step in and keep the industry going. “You would like to think ultimately that there would be more yacht construction in the future, but that’s something we will just have to wait and see about,” he said.

Old Modern Handicrafts B019 Runabout Small Model Boat

Toys, Toddlers & Baby

The "wooden runabout boat" we know today did not exist prior to the early part of this century and for the most part ceased to be built shortly after its heyday of construction during the mid-1950s. Today only small numbers of all-wood runabouts are built. The runabout is characterized by the all-wood construction of its hull (whether it is painted or stained and then varnished and whether its deck is all-wood as well or canvas-covered) and its inboard motor. Material: Highest quality woods such as mahogany and exotic local woods. Beautiful crafted wooden and metal knick-knacks such as steering wheel seats lights canoe propeller and many more. Hand built by skilful and creative master craftsmen. Built according to scale through original plans pictures and drawings (1: 12). Model sits on a wooden stand and is ready to be display. Fully assembled. Dimensions: 5" H x 16" W x 5" D.

Oh the joys of the open road!
Timeline of motoring history 1679 - 1939 1679 Practical French scientist Denis Papin invents the pressure-cooker or ‘digester’. 1690 Many before him have experimented with single charges of gunpowder as a means of moving a piston in a bore but, Denis Papin publishes his ideas for harnessing steam as an alternative, to achieve repeated cycles of movement. In doing so, he recognises the potential for a mechanical alternative to animals for mobilising carriages. He goes on to build the first steam engine, which is used to pump water to a canal running between Kassel and Karlshaven in Germany. 1698 English military engineer Thomas Savery uses Papin’s ‘Digester’ as the basis of a crude steam engine for pumping water out of flooded mine-shafts. 1712 Denis Papin, visiting London in the hope of finding patronage, writes to a friend reporting his failure and asking for financial support to pay for his return to Germany. Never heard of again, it is likely that Papin died in London in...

Quoting Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum | Vought F4U-1D Corsair : By V-J Day, September 2, 1945, Corsair pilots had amassed an 11:1 kill ratio against enemy aircraft. The aircraft's distinctive inverted gull-wing design allowed ground clearance for the huge, three-bladed Hamilton Standard Hydromatic propeller, which spanned more than 4 meters (13 feet). The Pratt and Whitney R-2800 radial engine and Hydromatic propeller was the largest and one of the most powerful engine-propeller combinations ever flown on a fighter aircraft. Charles Lindbergh flew bombing missions in a Corsair with Marine Air Group 31 against Japanese strongholds in the Pacific in 1944. This airplane is painted in the colors and markings of the Corsair Sun Setter, a Marine close-support fighter assigned to the USS Essex in July 1944. Transferred from the United States Navy. Quoting Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum | Boeing B-29 Superfortress "Enola Gay": Boeing's B-29 Superfortress was the most sophisticated propeller-driven bomber of World War II and the first bomber to house its crew in pressurized compartments. Although designed to fight in the European theater, the B-29 found its niche on the other side of the globe. In the Pacific, B-29s delivered a variety of aerial weapons: conventional bombs, incendiary bombs, mines, and two nuclear weapons. On August 6, 1945, this Martin-built B-29-45-MO dropped the first atomic weapon used in combat on Hiroshima, Japan. Three days later, Bockscar (on display at the U.S. Air Force Museum near Dayton, Ohio) dropped a second atomic bomb on Nagasaki, Japan. Enola Gay flew as the advance weather reconnaissance aircraft that day. A third B-29, The Great Artiste, flew as an observation aircraft on both missions. Transferred from the United States Air Force. Manufacturer: Boeing Aircraft...
